Dayak is the name for the collective tribes of Borneo. Tattoos represent an important part of their cultural and communal life. For men, the unique Borneo style signifies ancestral connections, spiritual beliefs, and headhunting status. For the women, tattoos signified ancestral connections, spiritual beliefs, and provided protection from harm. Tattoos to the Dayak have importance in the afterlife as well as this life. It is believed that in the next world all things are reversed and therefore the tattoo shines light to guide their spirit.
